Farmstead Risk Assessment and Planning Training

Aug 18 2009 9:00 AM - 3:30 PM

Folks,

Again this year, the State Soil and Water Conservation Committee in conjunction with the Natural Resources Conservation Service and local Soil and Water Conservation Districts is holding a one-day on-farm training to assist folks in honing their planning skills in a farmstead situation. The workshop will cover such topics as identifying resource concerns and developing alternatives for issues associated with barnyard run-off, silage leachate, milking center waste, manure management and other concentrated sources. This workshop is open to all folks involved in planning including private sector, NRCS and SWCD personnel. This is a great opportunity for new employees as well as folks who are working on CNMPs or AEM Tier III planning efforts. We will be focusing on the skills that planners need to develop meaningful CNMPS for funders and landowners, including alternative practices, O & M, sizing and location criteria, etc.

The day will include a small amount of classroom learning and a majority of the day spent on-farm where teams of planners will inventory and evaluate an existing farmstead, identify areas of concerns and develop real-time alternatives to solve these issues and eliminate the threat to the environment.

The date of this event is August 18th, 2009 starting at the Cayuga County SWCD Service Center at 9:00 am. We hope to have folks back on their way home no later than 3:30 pm. An agenda for the day is attached. Directions to the SWCD Service Center will be provided to folks upon registration.

We ask that anyone wishing to attend please send me an email at Bob.Brower@agmkt.state.ny.us and provide me with a name, title, affiliation and relative experience level (novice, intermediate, seasoned veteran) by August 10th. This is necessary so that sufficient copies of take-home material are prepared. There is no cost for the training but participants are urged to bring a bag lunch and all-weather gear as the training will be held regardless of weather (rain or shine, sun block or raingear). Rubber boots are also recommended.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me or Doug Gillette of NRCS at Doug.Gillette@ny.usda.gov

We hope to see you there.
