Native willow identification and collection training: Sept. 4, 9, and 11

Sep 4 2008 9:30 AM - 2:00 PM

NEW YORK STATE BULLETIN NO. 180-08-8

SUBJECT: - CPA - Native willow identification and collection training

Purpose:  To announce dates and location of native willow identification and collection training

 Expiration Date:  September 30, 2008

Background:  There is interest and need for more diverse willow shrub species when planting in riparian areas, stream banks and wetlands. There is insufficient availability of native willow species in the nursery trade in the Northeast. As part of the Plant Materials program mission, we will be making collections of 5 species of shrub willows which we will propagate to evaluate and increase for eventual release to the nursery trade.  We are asking for interested personnel to help us with collecting four species of native willows, Salix discolor, S. eriocephala, S. sericea, S. lucida and S. petiolaris . There will be four training sessions set up for interested NRCS, SWCD or other partners in New York State. The purpose of the training is to show personnel the identifying features of these 5 willows and some of the other common willows which we do not want to collect, as well as collecting and shipping procedures. These willows will be identified during the growing season, marked, located by GPS or on topo maps, then will be collected during the dormant season and sent to the Big Flats Plant Materials Center for propagation in the Spring of 2009.

Interested persons need only attend one of the training sessions.  The trainings are scheduled as follows:

 Walton Field office - Delaware Co.  9/4/08  9:30 - 2:00

Lafayette Field office - Onondaga Co. 9/9/08  9:30 - 1:00

Batavia Field office - Genesee Co.  9/11/08  9:30 - 1:00

There may be a meeting planned at the Canton Field office in St. Lawrence Co. which will be announced to those offices in the Northern Adirondacks.   If you are interested and can attend this workshop with your Supervisor's approval, please contact Paul Salon for further information at paul.salon@ny.usda.gov.  Please share these dates and information with your cooperating agency personnel.
