Tour of Big Flats Plant Materials Center facility and perennial biofeedstock projects - 7/30/08
The tour will give an overview of the Plant Materials Center facility, equipment, and agronomic research projects. These include existing projects as well as new demonstration projects implemented as part of a New York Farm Viability Grant in cooperation with Cornell University, "Accelerated Evaluation of Perennial Grass Feedstocks for Biofuel Production in New York State". There will also be presenters from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry to talk about their shrub willow biomass project. The tour will look at cultivar trials of cool/warm season grasses and shrub willows, establishment trials investigating herbicides, seed treatments and establishment techniques including time of seeding and interseeding with corn. Attendees will have the opportunity to see the plants in the seedling and mature stages. There will be speakers in the afternoon from the Cornell Agriculture Engineering Department discussing conversion of grasses to ethanol: USDA-ARS discussing their biofeedstock establishment and management research in the Northeast; Resource Efficient Agricultural Production (REAP) Canada discussing their ongoing switchgrass pelleting research and development; and MESA Engineering, a company who is actively processing biomass for energy companies.
See announcement for further details.
